BrainyKit Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 14, 2026 · Publisher: BasenAI · Contact: support@basenai.org
The short version
BrainyKit runs on your computer. Your projects, documents, notes, chats and settings are stored on your device, in the folder .brainykit inside your user folder. We do not run a BrainyKit server that receives your content, and BrainyKit contains no analytics or tracking.
What stays on your device
- Files and web pages you add, your notes, highlights and chat history.
- Your settings, including any API key you enter for a cloud provider.
- A local crash log (
crash.log), which is never sent anywhere automatically. - Voice dictation uses a speech model that ships with the app and runs locally. Read-aloud uses the voices built into your system unless you choose to download BrainyKit’s own voices, which also run locally.
When data leaves your device
BrainyKit only contacts the internet for things you ask for or choose:
- Local AI model download. You can download an AI model to run on your device. It is downloaded from Hugging Face (huggingface.co), which sees your IP address and the model file you download, under its own privacy policy. If Hugging Face cannot be reached from your network, BrainyKit automatically tries a public mirror of the same file (hf-mirror.com), which sees your IP address and the model file in the same way. BrainyKit checks the downloaded file against a fixed checksum and discards it if it does not match, so a mirror cannot change the model you receive.
- Voice download (optional). If you choose to install BrainyKit’s own read-aloud voices, they are downloaded from Hugging Face in the same way. After that they run on your device.
- Cloud AI provider (optional). If you enter your own API key and endpoint (for example OpenAI, Google Gemini, OpenRouter or Groq), the text of your questions and the passages BrainyKit retrieves from your sources are sent to that provider to produce an answer. That provider’s terms and privacy policy apply. If you only use a local model, this never happens.
- Web pages you add. When you add a web address as a source, BrainyKit downloads that page from its website.
- Updates. The Microsoft Store version is updated by the Microsoft Store. The direct-download version checks for new releases on GitHub.
- Reporting a response. If you press the report button on an AI response, BrainyKit prepares an email to support@basenai.org containing a short excerpt of that one response. Nothing is sent until you send the email, and you can edit or delete anything in it first. If you choose to compose it in Gmail, the draft opens in your browser at mail.google.com.
AI-generated content
Answers and Studio outputs are generated by AI models. They can be wrong or inappropriate, so please check important information against your sources. You can report a problem with any response in chat, or with any Studio output, using the report button next to it.
Your choices and deleting your data
Everything is on your device. To delete it, uninstall BrainyKit and delete the .brainykit folder in your user folder. Remove any API key in Preferences to stop using a cloud provider.
Children
BrainyKit is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes we will update the effective date above and publish the new version at this address.
